This is the image for the news article titled Barnes Art Challenge WinnersWe are thrilled to announce that Ms. Scherff's student group won the "Best Math" prize in the elementary division at the Art of Math Challenge at The Barnes Foundation on Sunday, March 5, 2017!  The Barnes Art of Math Challenge invited K-12 students in the Philadelphia area to use math to build a two-dimensional painting from the Barnes collection into a three-dimensional model to correct proportion and detail. Any type of mathematical process or material could be used as long it was student-led, with teachers acting only as guides.

Prizes for best use of math were given out to one group each in elementary, middle school and high school grade bands. Ms. Scherff's group competed against seven other 5th grades from Philadelphia and approximately 20 elementary school classrooms in total. Our three student representatives from the group did a wonderful job during their interview with the judges, explaining and defending their creative use of math to complete the project. Different from their 5th grade competitors, Ms. Scherff's students drew inspiration from artist Chuck Close, using a grid system to minimize and transfer the objects in the original painting to their 3D model.

Group members included: Janiya Arroyo, Ella Ballow, Georgia DiCandilo, Aiden Dozier, Gianna Engle, Madison Falls, Justin Machen, Lupe Menjivar.
