Barkley Ski Club

Walk-A-Thon

On Friday, December 4, the Barkley Ski Club participated in their annual walk-a-thon.  The purpose of the walk-a-thon is to raise money to pay for the transportation costs of all four trips to Spring Mountain.  The weather for the event was great and they children walked many laps.  Several students walked over sixteen laps and at one quarter of a mile per lap, that’s over four miles!  During their walking, the children enjoyed listening to music played on the audio system and socialized with each other.  As a group, the club raised over $800.  The top fundraisers were Elyse, Zeke, and EJ.  Special thanks Mr. Chadwick, Ms. Scherff, and Mrs. Huxta for helping to supervise the children.

First Ski Trip in 2016
The Barkley Ski Club took their first trip to Spring Mountain on Friday, January 8.  This winter’s been unusually warm due to El Nino.  Unfortunately this makes it impossible for Spring Mountain to have snow.  Well, that all changed the week before our first trip as temperatures hovered around the freezing point for three straight day.  Spring Mountain worked very hard to create 12-15 inches of snow.  The children we very excited to get on the snow and to learn how to ski and snowboard.  Everyone did a great job!  Many students were able to ride the lift and make it down the beginner hill without falling.  Even more impressive was the club’s good manners and respect. Thank you to our chaperones for this trip were Mr. Chadwick, Mrs. Simmons, Mrs. Huxta, Ms. Scherff, Mrs. Marsh, Mr. Sindaco, Mrs. Geiger, and Mrs. Straight.   We also would like to thank our sponsor: Frees Insurance, Phoenixville Community Education Foundation, Varo Health Care, Dylan Meanix Landscaping, and ESE Machines.  Our next trips will be January 15, 22, and Feb. 5.
